I N D N 2 1 1Product Based Experiments

Project One Part A - Redesign

My Chosen Lighting Device

Click - NightGaurd "night light and torch"

Reason for choice:
- Effectively functional with a sensor which senses up to 3m radius to provide illumination of a space when someone is near
- Works by wirelessly charging a battery which when the apparatus is removed it also becomes a torch which can be used at night or emergencies
- Aesthetics let this design down, does not ergonomically fit your hand thus I want to "redesign" this lighting device to create a more effective product.

NightGuard

Features as stated on packaging:

- Rechargeable Torch
- Emergency Light
- Movement Activated Sensor Light
- Removable torch, always charged and ready to use
- Automatically activates when power fails; easy to find, ready to use torch
- Movement activated night light, with up to 3 metres motion detection range
- Plus into power point, always remains charged

Function Break Down

1 - Vertical 15 bright white LED lights
2 - On/Off button to activate the torch
3 - Light detector
4 - Sensor
5 - Base and charging dock for the torch component of                  the light
6 - set of 5 horizontal bright white LED lights

Product Questions:

- Who designed it for which company? When was it manufactured?

Design by the global company "click" for general consumers, sold at stores like Bunnings. Manufactured in 2009

- What is the specific purpose of the product? Was it designed accordingly and properly?

Specific purpose is as a NightGuard and it does exactly as the title implies, the product charges a torch which is ready to use and automatically turns on during power failure to guide the consumer to the light source but it also acts as a night light as when the sensor picks up movement it will turn on to provide bright white illumination for the consumer. It was designed effectively and accordingly

- Did you find any unique elements compared to other similar products?

I found the wireless charging quite a unique feature as it provides this product with the aspect of being portable and being able to leave the household and provide light anywhere you need

- Does it look good? Does it work well? How do you feel when you use it?

Aesthetically it is not superior as it is basic white and it does not look effective especially in a modern day and house. It works well in the sense that everything is placed accordingly and appropriately to provide light to the consumer but it could be changed to provide different aspects. Ergonomically the torch aspect should have been developed further as when I hold the torch in my hand I feel as if it does not fit nicely providing a comfortable grip.

- Have you found anything to be improved?

Yes, aesthetically I would change everything to make it look more modern and effective to the consumers eye, using materials such as steel and wood to create a nice product. Create the same circuit using a external battery so the device does not only have to be placed where a power point is as there may not be one where you require the light. Move the sensor so it could be a 360degree sensor so it can pick up movement anywhere to create an effective device. Change the shape to something more cylindrical.

- Where do you put it while not in use? Why?

It stays in the chosen power point as it is a product that requires constant power to charge the torch internal battery.

- Have you shown your friends and family? What did they say about it?

They enjoyed the wireless charging aspect as they found it magical that it can be charged like that without the use of wires, they like the design and it is very effective and enjoyed the functionality, they would purchase the product as it would be an asset in any household

- How would you design it if you were the designer?

I would keep the components the same but change the shape of the torch to a cylinder as it fits the hand in a more ergonomic manner and it looks more effective and in contrast I would change the shape of the base to create a more effective base that matches the torch. I would have considered materials heavily and used more modern materials such as steel and wood to make it more modern to still have that functionality but also to be a piece of art work displayed in your house.

Next steps for "ReDesign":

- Image the product in the environment that it would be placed in
- Dissemble the product to see what makes this design work and the components which I will be using in my final redesign

A good precedent on how I want to base my aesthetics for my redesign

  1. I have one of these that has stopped working. Can it be taken apart to determine the cause?
