Project One - Precedents:

Chimany Patel:

A friend studying at Massey university doing a major in photographic has created this portfolio for one of his assignments which I enjoyed viewing. He hinders on the genre of science fiction creating parallel universes using the realistic existing night sky and merging it with a space effect creating that effect of parallel universes which works effectively and it is something I want to consider in my project. 

 I like the effect in this image with the space in the background but I feel as if the merging and masking which would have been constructed on photoshop isnt that effective as the space background is too contrasting to the rest of the image, it does not flow well or blend well. 

 I quite like the effects in this image, makes me feel as if I am traveling at light speed, the perspective is effective as it feels as if the light will hit you. Very effective. 

This photo is my favorite from all of his images as I feel the lighting used is perfect and the glimpse of wellingtons night lights are placed well effectively and the space background has been merged well to create that effect which I always want to achieve. 

This image is also effective but like the image earlier it does blend as well as it should, from a distance I can see the line at which the background changes from realistic to science fiction with the space background, more effective blending and perspective exploration could have made this image stronger.

I enjoy these two images  as the use of one a light projecting on an image as humans with large imaginations straight away our thoughts go deep into the science fiction realm were you would perceive anything in the path of that light is going to be abducted by aliens or it has some similar connotation or is connected to science fiction. The composition for both images is very effective with a slight angle looking down on the town on the second image and slightly upwards on the first to give that effect that the source of light is superior to the town and the human in  the first image.

 I like the temperature of this image as it makes me think of space as it conveys that cold feeling that you would get in space and the composition overall is expressed effectively with the water reflection and moon image in the background. 

I really like this image as it conveys that "parallel universe" theme very effectively and the composition is effective with the road drawing our eyes into the city and then the large planet in the background makes us feel as if we are not on earth but on another planet. With the planet this large it gives the science fiction genre a strong relationship with the image as it displays something that is not realistic but something we can imagine in our minds.

From these Precedent images I will construct my proposal and my first shoot and start to experiment with photoshop and creating these science fiction effects.
