W. Eugene Smith
"Dream" a street sign in a poor black district
1955, USA. Pennsylvania. Pittsburgh
Photographed Image
944x610
Methods/Technique/Genre
Smith has used a black and white image using the rule of thirds with the street sign directly in the center with a vocal point on either side being the mail box and automobile to express his idea of "dream" an image taken in a poor distract to express the realism and how dreaming is exposed. Image is heavily edited with white balance and increase in sharpness.
Description
Black ans white image with high white balancing to give an edited aesthetic. Three main objects being the letter box, street sign and automobile. All vertical except the vehicle is on an angle. The objects create three columns within the image. The street sign is the focal point as the hierarchy suggest it stands taller and express the photo title being "dream".

In this image Smith expresses through the street sign and scene the realism of the poverty in 1995. The backdrop is in a poor district in Pennsylvania and the street sign which displays the word "dream" expresses connotations about the men and women who lived through that era who worked hard but could only dream.
Response
Form this image I want to incorporate the way that Smith expressed his idea, I want to compose an image in black and white and use a single object to express what life could be or what my subject rather be doing.

Idea is easily portrayed in this image by reading the written context below the image, expresses the idea about how they dont know were they went wrong and now they can only dream of what they want.
Response
For my own image I want to also convey the same message through my images without the text written below, also convey the same context in black and white

The idea is hard to read in this image as we don't know what the image in the portrait expresses, the women is holding this so the image has some significance to her, could be family she has lost or someone else of significance.
Response
I like the way the image has been constructed, and I want to apply the portrait idea into my series of images but in more context as the image will portray what my subject rather be doing.
